Roanoke City / House and tree damage
Tree on a Roanoke City house: what to record before cleanup
A damaged roof may need quick protection, but the tree and the claim still need a careful record. First leave an unsafe scene; then work from your insurer’s instructions.
Read the four steps ↗Safety, then the claim
Four steps before
the final repair.
Stay out of any unsafe area. These steps help with documentation only after immediate hazards are handled.
Deal with electrical and structural danger first
Do not go near a wire, leaning trunk or compromised structure to inspect damage. Appalachian Power treats a tree on a line as a safety hazard and lists 800-956-4237 for its customers; use the actual serving utility and call 911 for immediate danger. A City street tree may need Urban Forestry involvement; this is Roanoke City, not County.
Open the claim and ask about your terms
Virginia’s State Corporation Commission says to contact your agent or insurer’s claims department and ask what coverages and exclusions you bought. Tell them whether the tree damaged a building or other property, and ask about the deductible and debris-removal limits. No web guide can establish the answer for your policy.
Make safe temporary repairs and retain evidence
Virginia’s guide says necessary temporary protection, such as patching a roof, should not wait for an adjuster if doing so prevents further damage. Photograph the loss before cleanup when it is safe, keep receipts, and do not discard damaged items you believe are a complete loss before the company has examined them.
Compare an emergency scope with final repairs
Get a written tree-crew estimate identifying removal from the structure, rigging, hauling, stump and return visits. Keep it distinct from roofing and final restoration. Virginia’s guide advises written estimates and caution about signing major repair contracts before the representative has determined damage and payment. Ask the adjuster about hidden damage and changes.
Coverage is case-specific
Can I tarp the roof before an adjuster arrives?
Virginia’s consumer insurance guide says necessary temporary repairs to prevent more damage should be made promptly, with photos beforehand when safe and all receipts saved. That does not authorize unsafe DIY roof work or guarantee reimbursement. Ask the insurer for claim-specific directions and use qualified help for a tree on a structure.
Ask your insurer directly.
Tell the insurer the address, date, structure struck and immediate hazards; ask about temporary protection, tree-removal documentation, adjuster timing and what not to discard.
