Confirm city and property first

This guide covers Roanoke City, not Roanoke County. If the tree stood in the street strip or a protected open-space area, first check ownership and restrictions with the City. A private contractor’s stump price does not decide whether the City controls the tree or the site.

Calculate the old benchmark, then stop

ProMatcher published $3.06–$3.29 per diameter inch for Roanoke grinding to 6–8 inches below grade. At 24 inches, that works out to $73.44–$78.96. The estimate dates to August 2018. Its description calls hauling debris and removing large or aboveground roots extra; it is not a current bid or an all-in price.

Show the contractor the terrain

Photograph the route from street to stump, including gates, steps, retaining walls and slope. Ask what grinder fits, how the crew protects surfaces, and whether the proposed depth works for sod or another planned use. Never apply a made-up “hillside premium”; ask for a site-specific total.

Locate utilities and settle cleanup

Virginia 811 explains that a locate request covers member utility lines, not every private line on a lot. Ask about irrigation or outdoor lighting separately. Decide whether wood chips stay as mulch, are removed, or are replaced with soil; put roots and any second trip in the written quote.

A common price question

Does grinding mean the roots are gone?

No. The cited Roanoke estimate describes grinding the stump 6–8 inches below grade, not excavating an entire root system. If roots affect paving, grading or a new tree planting, ask for an assessment and a separate root-work scope.
