Collection rules and contractor scopes differ. Confirm them before any large pile appears at the curb.
Know what the City takes
Roanoke City says branches and shrubbery that do not fit in a trash can can be placed at the curb. Its weekly limit is approximately one pickup-truck load, with a maximum 6-by-6-by-6-foot pile; limbs must be under 3 inches in diameter. Stumps are excluded.
Check who cut the material
The City explicitly says it does not pick up brush cut by a contractor, tree company or utility company. If a business trims or removes a tree, have the business remove and dispose of that debris. Do not let a quote shift this cost to the City curb.
Observe time and location rules
The City collects brush on the regular trash day; material can go out after 7 p.m. the night before and before 7 a.m. on collection day. It does not collect brush from alleys. Use its published schedule and call Customer Service for address-specific questions.
Get a complete scope for bigger work
Ask the crew to state who hauls large trunk sections, smaller limbs, stump chips and root debris, and whether the site will be raked and restored. A steep driveway or narrow street may change equipment choice, but there is no standard premium to assume. For a street-strip tree, confirm City ownership with Urban Forestry first.
A common disposal question
Can I leave contractor-cut branches for City pickup?
No. Roanoke City’s published brush rules explicitly exclude brush cut by a contractor, tree company or utility. Require the crew to haul and dispose of it, and verify that service in the written price. Homeowner-cut brush still has size, timing and curb-location limits.
Name every leftover.
Put “all contractor-cut branches and logs hauled away” in the bid, with stump chips and soil fill addressed separately. Ask who performs any second visit.
